My neighbour has petroglyphs in her backyard

How can a book question the right of heritage to exist?

This art project by Sjoerd Martens explores Aruban cultural heritage in direct conflict with the potential extinction of endangered rock carvings found within "Aruban Backyards."

The Artist’s Vision

Sjoerd Martens (b. 1993, Nijmegen) creates imagery that interweaves the subliminal experience of living environments with the traces of human interaction. His perspective is that of an innocent bystander with a forensic objective; he seeks out findings that are omnipresent yet often overlooked in daily life. By capturing these encounters, he immortalizes moments of both a permanent and transient nature.

Martens' investigation into these human traces in nature led him to document the pictograms and petroglyphs of Aruba. His unexpected approach to archaeological imagery is inquisitive, sensory, and profoundly engaging.
