Free the map

How do you interrogate a map? What happens when graphic designers collaborate with a professor? And how do you bridge the gap between academic theory and practical execution within a single book?

Free the Map is a collaborative publication created alongside Professor Henk van Houtum (Professor of Geopolitics and Political Geography at Radboud University Nijmegen). The book is structured as a triptych: it opens with a theoretical framework, follows with a curated selection of alternative mapping by artists and scientists, and concludes with a series of practical assignments.

This project was made possible through the support of the Pictoright Fund and the Creative Industries Fund NL, and is published by nai010 publishers. The book features diverse contributions from an international group of makers and thinkers, including Catalogtree, Ruben Pater, Jonas Staal, Annelys de Vet, and many others.
